Google Shuts Down Phone Spyware Operation Hosted on Firebase
Google has terminated a spyware operation illegally hosted on its Firebase developer platform. The malicious software, identified as Catwatchful, was masquerading as a child monitoring app while secretly harvesting data from compromised Android devices.
TechCrunch reports the spyware collected extensive personal information from victims' phones, requiring physical installation to bypass security protocols. Such stalkerware applications often enable non-consensual surveillance, violating both Google's terms of service and privacy laws.
While Google confirmed suspending the violating accounts, questions remain about the month-long investigation period. The incident highlights the ongoing challenge tech giants face in balancing commercial interests with platform security responsibilities.
